Railways Supporting Poverty Reduction Path, Original Aspiration Illuminates Revitalization
Recently, at the Beijing Global Poverty Alleviation Partnership Seminar, the China State Railway Group's submissions 'Healthy Train Brings Hope to the Daliangshan Mountains' and 'China-Laos Railway Connects South Asia and Southeast Asia Poverty Alleviation Corridor' stood out among 840 cases from 40 countries, winning the Global Poverty Alleviation Best Case Award for three consecutive years. These two honors not only represent international recognition but also affirm that railways, as strategically significant infrastructure, play a core supporting role in poverty eradication and rural revitalization efforts, contributing a vivid Chinese model to the global poverty alleviation cause.
Precision is the core mechanism of China's railway-based poverty alleviation strategy. Facing the need to consolidate post-poverty achievements, railway departments abandoned one-size-fits-all approaches in favor of 'tailored solutions' to address specific challenges. The Yi ethnic minority communities deep in the Daliangshan Mountains faced prolonged medical resource scarcity, with 'impoverishment due to illness' posing a latent threat to their wellbeing. The 'Health Train' jointly launched by China Railway Chengdu Bureau and medical institutions precisely addressed this need—functioning not merely as a 'mobile hospital' traversing the mountains, but incorporating traditional Chinese medicine therapy programs tailored to Yi cultural practices. Over five years, it has served nearly ten thousand patient visits, distributed 1.65 million yuan in health resources, and conducted health education reaching over fifteen thousand people. More significantly, the railway extended beyond temporary medical assistance. Through educational mentoring and knowledge transfer initiatives, railway experts conducted skills training and arranged professional development for local medical personnel, substantively elevating grassroots healthcare standards. Today, numerous township health centers in Daliangshan employ Yi doctors trained by Health Train specialists, capable of independently diagnosing and treating common ailments. This green passenger train has genuinely transformed from a transfusion model to an internal capacity-building approach, establishing health as the foundation for the masses' wellbeing.
If the Health Train exemplifies the human dimension of poverty alleviation, the China-Laos Railway demonstrates its breadth of openness. As a flagship Belt and Road Initiative project, this steel corridor has, over four years of operation, transported over 62.5 million passengers and over 72.5 million tons of cargo, with data narrating a poverty alleviation miracle. It enabled Laos to transition from a landlocked nation to a land-linked nation, with material flows between South Asia and Southeast Asia no longer constrained by mountainous terrain, resulting in substantially reduced social logistics costs. The significance of the China-Laos Railway transcends a single infrastructure project—it bridges cross-regional cooperation, transforming poverty alleviation from a single nation's solo performance into a regional collaborative symphony, while grounding the concept of a shared human destiny on steel tracks.
The vitality of railway-based poverty alleviation further lies in aggregating collective strength and building a pluralistic ecosystem. Rather than acting alone, China's railways function as platforms, pooling resources to advance poverty alleviation from isolated breakthroughs toward systematic progress. In Nigeria, Africa, China Railway Engineering Corporation's supported Federal Transportation University—Africa's first transportation university—cultivates 500 railway professionals annually, filling local technical gaps. In Djibouti, the Luban Workshop, through government-enterprise-school collaboration, ended the country's deficiency in railway-related vocational education, with trainees securing employment upon admission and directly serving local transit development. From school-enterprise partnerships nurturing talent to localized operations transmitting technology, railways coordinate government, enterprises, and educational institutions, transforming poverty alleviation into a relay race with society-wide participation.
With China having achieved victory in the anti-poverty battle, railway-based poverty alleviation has shifted its focus to consolidating gains and supporting revitalization. This three-year consecutive international recognition reflects railways' substantial contributions to rural revitalization—enabling agricultural products to exit mountains and enter cities via specialized cold-chain trains, and integrating remote villages into high-speed railway economic circles; it also represents China's anti-poverty response in pursuing high-level opening-up, providing globally replicable practical pathways.
Looking forward, as railways undergo digital and intelligent upgrades, this steel artery will bear greater expectations: smoothing educational journeys for mountain children, enhancing cross-border cargo transportation efficiency, and enabling more people to share development benefits. Silent rails, through each kilometer's extension, inscribe the original intent of 'people's railways for the people'; China's railway poverty alleviation narrative will continue injecting Chinese wisdom into global shared prosperity, casting the light of interconnection on more paths to happiness.
